Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland have a fairly comprehensive rail network which runs as far north as it dares before plentiful buses take over. Fjords and inordinate amounts of water lakes, rivers and open sea make ferries a major form of transport too. For further information see each country's individual "Getting Around' section, and "Travel Details" at the end of every chapter. RAIL PASSES Nowhere does travel come cheap, but a number of passes can ease the burden. If you're travelling by train there is, of course, the InterHail or Eurail pass (see "Getting There from the UK and Ireland", above). But if you don't qualify for one of these it's well worth considering a Nordturist pass, which is available to anyone. In Britain, it costs just ?155 (?210 first class], and gives unlimited train travel In all four mainland Scandinavian countries for 21 days; it also Includes free travel (or fifty percent discounts) on many Scandinavian ferry crossings and bus routes, and free entry to Scandinavia's four railway museums.
