TRAVELLERS' CHEQUES & CREDIT CARDS It's easiest and safest to carry money as travellers' cheques, available for a small commission (usually one percent of the amount ordered) from EXCHANGING MONEY Ю Exchanging money is easy but usually expensive. Banks have standard exchange rates, but commissions can vary enormously and it's always worth shopping around. Some places charge per transaction, others per cheque, so it's common sense to carry large denomination cheques, or to try to change several people's money at once. Banking hours vary from country to country check each country under "Costs, Money and Banks". Outside those times, and especially in the more remote areas, you'll often find that hostels, hotels, campsites, tourist offices, airports, ferry terminals and ferries will also change money though usually at worse rates than the banks. ттт1Ш\от:щтш trowEs Post office opening hours and general postal and telephone information Is given under each individual country's section on "Communications". You can have letters sent poste restante (general delivery) to any post office in Scandinavia by addressing them "Poste flestante' followed by the name of the town and country. When picking mail up you'll need to take your passport, and make sure they check under middle names and initials, as letters often get misfiled. Phone boxes are plentiful and almost invariably work; English instructions are normally posted up inside. To reverse the charges, phone the operator, who will speak English, and ask to make a collect call. To make a direct call to Britain or North America, dial the international access and country code, wait for the tone, then dial the area code, omitting the first 0 if there is one, and subscriber number. For further phone information, see each individual country's section on "Communications". MONEY.
